Magnan

sometimes Magné

René Magnan and his wife Anne Chevalier lived in La Rochelle, where they were members of the Huguenot "temple calviniste." It does not appear that Anne was related to our other Chevalier ancestors, the sieurs de Marres. They had a son also named René (born about 1615) who was a notary, and who married Marie Dufour at the Huguenot church in La Rochelle. She was the daughter of Pierre Dufour and Raymonde Tharais (see Dufour). René and Marie had at least four children: René (1640-1659), Pierre (1642), Marie (1654-1655), and Étienne (1657-1716), who emigrated to Québec in 1667. He settled at Pointe-aux-Trembles near Montréal (now a suburb; the image above is the town's arms).

In July1671 Étienne Magnan signed a marriage contract with Élisabeth Migneron, daughter of Jean Migneron dit Lajeunesse and Marie Pavie, at Pointe-aux-Trembles. She was only eleven at the time, so the marriage took place in 1675. They had twelve children: Marie-Thérèse (1676-1710, married Claude Bourgouin); Jean-Baptiste (1678); Étienne (born and died 1681); Alexis (1682-1708); Michel (1684-1713); another Étienne (1687, see below); Cathérine (1688-1758); François (born and died 1689); Pierre (1691-1757); Jean (1693-1718); Marie-Angélique (1697); and Marie-Cathérine (1700-1702).

Marie-Thérèse and Claude Bourgouin were the parents of five children, including Louis-François, who was a great-great-grandfather of Louise Boucher Martin (see Bourgouin).

Her brother Étienne Magnan (born 1687) married Marie-Anne Matte (daughter of Nicolas Matte and Marie-Madeleine Auvray) on February 27, 1713 at Neuville, and after her death, he married Marie-Madeleine Déry on January 7, 1732). Children by the first wife: Étienne (emigrated to the Illinois country, then claimed by France, where he married first Françoise- Marie-Louise Pichard and then Marie-Marthe LaRoche); François (1716-1788, married Agnès Vilmer dite Drouard); Marie-Anne (married Joachim Tessier); and Marie-Thérèse (1727-1777, married Charles Cluseau dit l'Orangé).

Marie-Anne and Joachim Tessier were the parents of Françoise-Josèphe Tessier Gauthier, mother of Rose Gaudrier Turcotte, great-grandmother of Marie Eva Jean Martin.
