Maugras

Claude Maugras and his wife Françoise Flaugny lived at Ligny-le-Chatel in Burgundy (the photo above shows a detail of the medieval town gate). Their son Jacques Maugras was baptized there in March 1636, and Claude died there in February 1662. Jacques emigrated (for reasons unknown) to Québec in 1668, and was married in November of that year in Trois-Rivières to Marie-Jeanne Moral (daughter of Quentin, see Moral). It would be interesting to know how this happened - the Moral family were wealthy colonists with large estates, and Jacques was presumably a poor immigrant whom Marie could not have known for more than a few months.

Their children; Marie-Jeanne (c1670, married Pierre Gamelin dit Châteauvieux); Marie-Françoise (born and died 1673); Marguérite (1674, married Jean-Baptiste Gamelin dit Launière); Jacques (born and died 1679); Marie-Josèphe (1682-1684); Marie-Madeleine (1685, who gave birth to an illegitimate son before marrying Julien Perrault dit Rochefort); Marie-Gertrude (1676, married Pierre Couturier); and Marie-Françoise (born and died 1688). When Jacques died, Marie-Jeanne married Gilles Couturier, also our ancestor by his first wife; therefore Gertrude was Pierre's stepsister.

Gertrude and Pierre Couturier were married at St-François-du-Lac in May 1705. See Couturier for descendants.
