Antoine Babin was born about 1630, possibly in Vienne (above); we know nothing of his background. he was in Acadia by 1660. He married Marie Mercier in 1661 - she was born about 1645, a daughter of Marie-Françoise Gaudet, who was also our ancestor through her first husband Daniel Leblanc, but was reportedly also married to a man named Mercier, who was this Marie's father. Dates are uncertain; perhaps Marie was illegitimate. After Antoine died, she married Guillaume Lejuge (probably in 1688); one daughter, Élisabeth Lejuge, who married Pierre Benoît and had twelve children. The 1671 and 1686 censuses give conflicting ages for Antoine, and he was dead before the 1693; we know almost nothing about him except that he was a "laboreur" (usually means farmhand in Acadia). Even less is known about Marie. They had ten children: Anne (married Abraham Doiron and Clément Benoît); Catherine (married Jean Comeau); Charles (c1664-1729, married Madeleine Richard); Françoise (married Jean Pitre); Jean (married Marguérite Boudreau); Jeanne (married Michel Richard dit Sansoucy, see Richard, and also Laurent Doucet); Madeleine (married Jean Martin, nephew of our ancestor Marguérite Martin Bourg; and Laurent Sousneuf); Marguérite (married Antoine Brault); Marie (married François Raimbault and Claude Landry); and Vincent (married Anne Thériault). |
