Madeleine Charlot was the wife of Pierre Gareman; they were natives of the town of Bagneux in Picardy (not far southwest of the cathedral city of Laon). They married in about 1628, and emigrated to Québec in 1637 of 1638, with their daughters Florence and Nicole; a third daughter, Marguérite, was born in Trois-Rivières in 1639. Their son Charles was born there too, in 1643. Madeleine died in January 1652. The church in Bagneux is called St-Martin. In 1999, the town had only 62 people. It is the site of a very large British military cemetery from World War I. See Gareman for more about Pierre and Charles, who were captured and killed by Indians in 1653. Florence in 1641 had married François Boucher. |
