Chevalier Sieurs de Marres |
|||||
|
This family held a manor in the Perche region of Normandy in the sixteenth century (and perhaps earlier, but I cannot trace the line). Macé Chevalier was Sieur de Marres in mid-century; we do not know his wife's name, but his son Gilles Chevalier married Nicole Pineau (1577-1608), daughter of Nicolas (or Mathurin) Pineau and Valentine Gadois; Nicole's brother Hercule was Sieur de Mallard (he bought a valuable mill from his niece's husband Jacques Gaudry in 1622). The parish church has a famous medieval sundial (above). Gilles and Nicole Chevalier had only one child that we know of: Charlotte (1601-1682), who married Jacques Gaudry in 1621. He was a tanner by trade, but must have accumulated some wealth and influence (not to mention the mill he sold to his wife's uncle) in order to marry into the local landed gentry. He died in 1637, but his widow accompanied their two sons to Québec in 1652. See Gaudry for Charlotte's descendants. |
