Comeau

The origin of the family is unknown, though the surnames of Pierre Comeau and his wife Rose Bayol both sound Breton. If the Acadian census records are correct, there was a very big age difference (suggesting that Rose was a second wife) - Pierre was born about 1598, Rose about 1631. In any case they were in Port-Royal (above) by 1656, when Pierre was working there as a cooper. The first few children were born in France, so they were not married in Acadia, as some sources claim. There was a Nicolas Bayol in Acadia as well - perhaps her father or brother; he gave his birthplace as Dijon. We also find an Armand Comeau and an Alexis Comeau in Acadia; very likely Pierre's brothers, but there is no proof.

Pierre and Rose had at least nine children; if his age is correct, he was in his late sixties when the last was born. They were: Étienne (c1651, married Marie-Anne Lefèbvre about 1671, and Marie Landry about 1694 - she is our ancestor via her first husband Laurent Granger); Pierre dit l'Aîné and L'Esturgeon (c1653, married Jeanne Bourg, sister of our ancestor Marie-Jeanne Bourg Béliveau); Françoise (c1656, married Jean Gaudet, whose sister Marie Gaudet Hébert is our ancestor); Jean (1657, married Françoise Hébert; two of her sisters are also our ancestors); another Pierre (1658, married Jeanne Bourgeois, sister of our ancestor Germain Bourgeois); Antoine (1661); Marie-Anne (1664, married Étienne Rivet); and Jean-Augustin (1665, married Catherine Babin, sister of our ancestor Jeanne Babin Richard).

Jean Comeau and Françoise Hébert were married in Port-Royal about 1677, and had fifteen children: Marie (1678, married Pierre Girouard); Étienne (1680, married Marguérite Forest and Élisabeth Levron); Pierre (1680, married Suzanne Bézier); Jean-Baptiste (1683, married Anne-Marie Thibodeau); Anne-Marie (1685, married François Richard); Marguérite (1687, married Ambroise Melançon); Augustin (1688, married Jeanne Levron dit Nantais); Claude (1690); François (1691-1717, married Marie-Jeanne Soulard ; Françoise (1694-1717, married Jean-Baptiste Soulard); Alexandre (1695, married Marie Bertrand); Madeleine (1697, married Pierre Trahan); Marie-Charlotte (c1702, married Jean Trahan); Joseph (1703, married Brigitte Levron and Madeleine Girouard); and Anne-Judith (1705, married René Giscé). After Françoise died, Jean married Catherine Joseph in 1720; no children.
