Gaudrier

or Gauthier

The preferred spelling is "Gauthier," but the 1790 marriage record of Gabriel Turcotte calls his wife "Rose Gaudrier," and I retain that spelling here to differentiate the family from that of Denise Gauthier (wife of Léonard Pilote) and from that of Renée Gauthier (wife of Louis Thibault). Almost all sources on the Turcotte family spell it Gauthier.

The immigrant ancestor is Jacques Gauthier, who was born on April 4 and baptized on June 2, 1647 in the church of St-Vivien in Rouen (above). His parents were Simon Gauthier and Marie Aubé. Jacques came to Québec in 1665, listed simply as an 'emigrant.' He worked as a carpenter in the capital before acquiring his own farm. He died on February 2, 1715 in the parish of Ste-Croix, Lotbinière. He married first Élisabeth-Ursule Denevers at Sillery, on September 11, 1672. They appear to have lived at Varennes, where most of their children were born and married. The children: Augustin (married Marie-Josèphe Jouet); Étienne (married Anne Decelles dite Duclos); Jacques (married Catherine Choquet); Jean-Baptiste (see below); Jean-François (married Élisabeth-Ursule Hamel); Joseph (married Marie-Catherine Hamel); Marguérite (c1702-1756, married Jacques Lussier; and Marie-Angélique (died 1732; married Charles-Joseph Hamel).

Jean-Baptiste Gauthier was born in 1688, probably at Boucherville, and died April 24, 1756 at Ste-Croix, Lotbinière. He married Marie-Catherine Lemay (born 1693, daughter of Michel Lemay and Marie-Catherine Jobin; Michel was a brother of our ancestor Marie-Madeleine Lemay Houde) on November 18, 1714 at Ste-Croix. They had sixteen children: Marie-Catherine (1715-1733); Jean-Baptiste (c1717-1787, married Marie-Josèphe Cosette, 5 children); Marie-Angélique (1719, married Joseph Paquin); Antoine (c1722-1733); Étienne (c1724-1798, married Marguérite Vacher dite Lacerte); Marie-Madeleine (c1724, married Jean-Baptiste Griveault dit Boisjoly); Marie-Josèphe (c1726-1762, married Joseph Barrette dit Descormiers); Joseph (c1728, married Marie-Anne Saucier, 7 children); Augustin (1729, married Marie-Charlotte Hamel, 8 children); Marie-Geneviève (1730-1805, married Jean-Baptiste Arvisse); Louis (see below); Amable (1734, perhaps died young); François (married Marie Josèphe Demers); another Antoine (1736-1749); Ignace (married Marie-Catherine Foucher, 7 children); and Marie-Charlotte (died 1789, married Michel Vaudry and Charles Demers).

Louis Gauthier or Gaudrier was born probably in 1732, and probably at Lotbinière. He married Clémence Gladu at Louiseville in 1759 (3 children, Louis, Marie-Angélique, and Charles), and after her death married Françoise-Josèphe Tessier (daughter of Joachim Tessier and Anne Magnan) at Pointe-du-Lac on May 20, 1765. They were the parents of seven children: Françoise (1766, died young); Marie-Josèphe (married Charles Lesieur); Marie-Rose (see below); Antoine-Arthur (married Marguérite Weaner); Jean-Baptiste (married Margaret Mary Rice); Anne (married Joseph Boisclair); and Louis (married Josephine Labonne).

Rose Gaudrier must have been born about 1767 or 1770; the birth order of her siblings is unclear. She married Gabriel Turcotte or Turcot in Trois-Rivières on November 15, 1790. Their son Aléxis was maternal grandfather of our great-grandmother Marie Eva Jean Martin.
