Michel Godbout and his wife Colette Caron lived in the parish of Nôtre-Dame in Berneval-le-Grand in Normandy, not far the mouth of the Seine (so Colette was probably not related to our other Caron ancestors, from the La Rochelle region). They had eight children, all born at Berneval: Jean (1625), Marie (1628), Michelle (1630), Jeanne (1633), Nicolas (1635), Jeanne (1638), Pierre (1640), and Simon (1643). Nicolas became a merchant sailor while in his teens, and first appears in Canadian records when he was only 19 (in 1654). He married Marie-Marthe Bourgouin (c1637-1682, daughter of Jean Bourgouin and Marie Lefèbvre of St-Nicolas-des-Champs (photo above) in Paris; she was not a "fille du roi," but appears to have come to Canada without her parents in 1661. She was not related to our other Bourgouin ancestors, who were from Poitou). They were married January 9, 1662 at Nôtre-Dame de Québec. Nicolas died at the Hôtel-Dieu on September 5, 1674, and in 1675 his widow married Antoine Marcereau; they had no children. The five children of Nicolas Godbout and Marie-Marthe Bourgouin are: Marie-Madeleine (1663-1668); Marie-Jeanne (1665-, married Jean Baillargeon, 4 children, and René Pelletier); Nicolas (see below); Antoine (1669-, married Marguérite LaBrecque, sister of our ancestor Pierre LaBrecque, 2 children); and Joseph (1672-, married Marguérite Manseau). The younger Nicolas Godbout was baptized at Nôtre-Dame de Québec on October 14, 1667 and died sometime between 1717 and 1720. On October 16, 1685 at St-Laurent on the Île d'Orléans he married Marguérite-Angélique Lemelin (daughter of Jean Lemelin dit Tourangeau and Marguérite Brassard). Seventeen known children: Marguérite-Angélique (1686-1690); Nicolas (1688-1719); Marie-Françoise (1690, married Joseph Gosselin); Marie-Louise (1691-1708, married Jean-Baptiste Audet dit Lapointe); Joseph (1693-, married Marie-Madeleine Bouchard dit Dorval); Marie-Madeleine (1694-1728, married Pierre Langlois); Marguérite-Marie (1696, married Louis Pichet); Jean (1698, married Marie-Louise Gauthier dit Frappedabord); Marie-Louise (1699, died young); Pierre (1701, married Catherine LaBrecque, niece of our ancestor Anne LaBrecque St-Laurent); Marie-Angélique (1703, married Antoine Fontaine); another Marie-Madeleine (1704-137, married Simon Turcot); Marie-Anne (1705, married Georges Dumas); François (1707, married Marie-Louise Joly); Geneviève-Marie (1708, married Jean-Alexis Chevalier); Louis (1710, married Marie-Agathe Laine dit Laliberté); Marie-Thérèse (1712, married Louis Pichet); and André (1713-1751, married Marie-Madeleine Choret). Simon Turcot and Marie-Madeleine Godbout were great-great-great-grandparents of Marie Eva Jean Martin; see Turcotte. |
