At least six different families of this name are found in Nouvelle-France, from different regions of the mother country; but ours is yet another Martaize family - Jérôme Guérin and his wife Marie Blanchard (daughter of Guillaume; see Blanchard) live there in the first half of the seventeenth century. They did not emigrate, but Marie's brother did, and so did their son François Guérin. he was born about 1635 and came to Acadia sometime before 1558, when he married his cousin Anne Blanchard. He was dead (in Port-Royal) by 1670, having lived to be only 35. Anne then married Pierre Gaudet (nephew of our ancestor Marie Gaudet Hébert) and had further children. François' children: Anne (c1659-1718, married Laurent Gaudin); Marie (1662-1723, married Pierre Arseneau); Jérôme (c1665, married Élisabeth Aucoin, 13 children); Huguette (1667, married Charles Doucet, brother of our ancestor Marguérite Doucet Dugas); and François (1669; he does not appear again after the 1671 census, and probably died young). Most of the Guérins were moved to the Île St-Jean in 1752, and later deported; some died at sea, and some ended up in Louisiana. But the family died out in the male line, so there are no genuine Cajuns named Guérin today. See Gaudin for descendants. |
