We are descended from two different Landry families, apparently unrelated. However, since our Acadian Landrys were in fact connected with the Martins of Bourgueil, it's possible that there is a connection. It's a very common name among Acadians and Cajuns; not so common in Québec. 1. Claire Landry was the mother of our immigrant patrilineal ancestor Jacques Martin. She was likely a native of Nemours, where she lived with her husband and children; we know nothing further about her. 2. Jean-Claude Landry (1593-1671) is our ancestor through several different lines in Acadia. He lived his entire life in the Mortagne, and married twice. The name of his first wife is unknown; the second (married 1633) was Marie Salle, daughter of Jeanne Salle and Françoise Arnaud. Children by the first wife: Pérrine (married Jacques Joffriau); Marguérite (married Robert Martin, later came to Acadia with him); and twins Antoinette and René, born 1618. By Marie Salle, Jean-Claude had one further son: another René, born 1634. As both Renés later came to Acadia, there is some confusion regarding their descendants. They are usually called René l'aîné and le jeune (the elder and the younger). The family seems to have lived at different times in La Chausse and La Ventrouze (above), both in the Mortagne area where so many Canadian families originated. First, Marguérite: her husband Robert was of the same family as our Y-chromosome matching cousin Romeo Martin; we are descended from this family by a female line, but have not yet established the male-line connection. Marguérite gave birth to a son, Barnabé, in Bourgeuil in the Touraine, about 1636; he died in Port-Royal in 1693 (see Martin). Antoinette Landry married Antoine Bourg or Bourcque in 1642 in Port Royal; the families had probably known each other in France. They had eleven children (see Bourg). One of these was Jean Bourg, the father of Madeleine Bourg Leblanc. Antoinette's twin brother René l'aîné married Pérrine Bourg, sister of his sister's husband, in or about 1645 in Port-Royal; he died there in 1685. They had six children: Marie-Marguérite (1646); Marie (1648); another Marie (1650-1719, see below); Marie-Madeleine (1656-1740, married René Richard dit Beaupré and Pierre Dupuis); Pierre (1658, married Madeleine Robichaud, 6 children); and Claude (1663-1740, see below). René le jeune (1634?-1686) married Marie Bernard (1645-1719); they had fifteen children. As far as I can tell we are not descended from him, though his children and grandchildren intermarried quite often with Bourg, Comeau, Prince, Dugas, Richard, and other families we are descended from. Claude Landry (1663-December 12, 1740) was born and lived all his life in Port-Royal. He married Marguérite Terriot (Thériault, Theriot) about 1684. Their ten children: Marie-Madeleine (1684, married Abraham Dugas); Marie-Josèphe (1686, married Charles Boudreau, 8 children, and Pierre Bourg); Claude (1690, married Marie Babineau, 8 children); Marguérite (1692, married Denis Petitot, one daughter); Jean-Baptiste (1693, married Anne Petitot); Marguérite-Marie (1694); Anne (1696-1728, married Michel Boudreau, 8 children); Jeanne (1700, married François Boudreau, 14 children); Pierre (1704-1774, married Cécile Robichaud); and Joseph (1713-1768, married Jeanne Robichaud). Claude Landry's sister Marie (1650-1719) married Laurent Granger (five children, including our ancestor Anne Granger Melançon); see Granger and Melançon. |
