Both Joseph Arthur Martin and his wife Marie-Eva Jean were descended from the immigrant Noël Langlois and his wife Françoise Grenier.

The earliest known ancestor is Gillaume Langlois (born 1566), who with his wife Jeanne Millet (born 1570) lived in the Norman village of St-Léonard-des-Parcs (105 inhabitants in 1999; the photo is of the local manor house, now a hotel). This is very near Le Havre, from which another Langlois family came. Gillaume was dead before 1634, when his son first appears in Québec. (There was a sister, Marie, 1600-1661.) Noël Langlois (who reported his occupation as ship's pilot) probably emigrated in 1633, and married Françoise Grenier or Garnier in Québec city on July 25, 1634. By the time he died in Beauport in 1684, he owned a very large farm of sixty arpents. After Françoise died, he married Marie Crevet in 1666.

Children by the first marriage: Robert (1635-1654); Marie (1636); Anne (1637-1704, married Jean Pelletier dit Gobloteur); Marguérite (1639-1697, married Paul Vachon); Jean Langlois dit Boisverdun (1641-1688, married Charlotte-Françoise Bélanger); Jeanne (1643-1687, married René Chevalier); Élisabeth (1645, married Louis Côté); Marie (1646-1687, married François Miville dit LeSuisse); Jean Langlois dit Saint-Jean (1648-1690, married Marie Cadieux); Noël Langlois dit Traversy (1651-1693, married Aimée Caron and Geneviève Parent). Noël senior's second wife was the widowed mother of his son Noël's first wife, Marie Crevet (who had been married to Robert Caron). They had no children, but we are descended from Marie via her first husband (see Caron).

Here is Marie-Eva Jean's descent: Jean Pelletier dit Gobloteur and Anne Langlois were the parents of René Pelletier, who married Marie-Madeleine Leclerc; their daughter Marie-Thérèse married Pierre-Noël Morin; their daughter Geneviève married François Daignault dit Laprise; their son François married Julie Gaudreau; their daughter Esther married Louis Jean; their son Louis married Célina Turcotte; their daughter was Marie-Eva Jean Martin.

Also note that Joseph Arthur Martin is descended from Marie Crevet by her first husband, and Marie-Eva Jean by her second.
