Charles Matte and Barbe Harache were married some time before 1636 in Sainte-Geneviève-en-Bray, in Normandy (above; today a village of 250 people). Their son Nicolas was baptized there on December 4, 1636. He was in Québec as a soldier by 1666, and married Madeleine Auvray (a fille du roi) in Québec city on October 12, 1671. Their children were probably born in Cap-Santé: Laurent (1672-1712, married Françoise Sylvestre, 5 children); Marie Françoise (1673-1749, married François Laroche); Aléxis (married Marie Françoise Carpentier); Nicolas (married Marie-Angélique Coquin dite LaTournelle, 7 children); Marie-Angélique (died 1775, married Isaac-Joseph Garnier and François Houde); Marie-Anne (see below); Marie-Madeleine (1682-1747, married Noël Pelletier); Marie-Jeanne (died 1703, married Jacques Bourgouin, brother of our ancestor Claude Bourgouin); and Louise (1694-1734, married Jean-François Constantineau). Marie-Anne Matte was born about 1690 and married Romain Dubuc in 1709 in Neuville; they had one son, André, who in 1740 married Cécile Langevin. Romain soon died, and Marie-Anne married Étienne Magnan on February 27, 1713 at Neuville. They had four children, including our ancestor Marie-Anne Magnan Tessier. |
