Prévost or Provost |

Élisabeth Prévost or Provost was a "fille du roi," a native of the parish of St-Nicolas in Rouen. They would have known the "Gros Horloge," which is a few streets away from their church. Her parents' names were Adrien Prévost and Marie Leblond. She had a brother and sister, Jacques and Marguérite, who were apparently twins, as they were baptized on the same day in 1649. But Élisabeth's baptismal record is lost; she was probably born in 1646, based on her age as reported in later censuses in Québec. She appears in the 1669 census there, but was not married until November 1671. We do not know what she was doing before that, but unmarried "filles du roi" usually worked as domestics. It is unusual for two years to pass before a "fille du roi" is married. She and her husband Jean Foucault lived at Becquet, just outside Québec city. She died in January 1722 at Trois-Rivières. See Foucault for descendants. |
